Beer and wood are good companions. Until the early 20th century beer of all styles was stored in wooden casks - but brewers wanted to avoid the oak, pine and even fruit flavours from wood in their beers and so stainless steel containers became the norm.
But now wood is back in favour. Brewers, inspired by the Lambic beers of Belgium which are made by spontaneous fermentation, are now storing and ageing beer in wood.
St Albans-based beer writer Roger Protz, a former editor of the Good Beer Guide, leads this expert tasting of wood-aged beers at St Albans Beer & Cider Festival. There will be generous pourings from three local brewers - Crossover Blendery, Chiltern and Tring - who will present beers specially aged in oak, as well as the opportunity to taste American beers aged in Bourbon oak barrels.
Get ready for some exciting aromas and flavours from these special beers, and a fascinating and inspiring session for any beer lover.
